Problem | Students should solve actual problems within the VCL-project. In order to ensure this, the case study must contain realistic problem situations. The preparation of such an interesting and authentic background story often proves to be quite difficult. |

Framework | Solving a case study; learning objective focuses on advancement of expertise; participants with heterogeneous expertise |
Solution | For successful processing of the task, it is essential that the students can identify themselves with the case situation and the problem. Therefore, if possible, an authentic background story should be formulated in the design of the case study. The choice of a company, for example, which offers products or services, which meet the wide interest of VCL-users (e.g. chocolate factory), is recommended. It is also important that the problem situation presented in such complex learning situation relates to the participants’ knowledge and experience and is of particular relevance to avoid a possible overload or poor motivation. The content of the background story should be accessible for all members at any time by uploading the documents on the learning platform. Thereby a clear description of the exemplary company and its structure is recommended, which is integrated in the learning platform (for example by creating a company page or link to a website (e.g. Google sites)). Example: As from 2009, the chocolate factory XoC is seeking employees working in business analysis. The global chocolate manufacturer is planning on a company-wide examination of existing process with particular focus on potential for improvements by using information and communication technologies. |
